Keep your people, premises and business safe from fire

Practical fire risk assessments for offices, small workplaces and SMEs across Widnes, Liverpool, Warrington, Manchester and Cheshire.

Our assessments are aligned to PAS 79-1:2020 and the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. You get a clear written report and an action plan you can actually work through.

Does my business need a fire risk assessment?

Yes. If you are responsible for business premises in England and Wales, the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 requires a suitable and sufficient fire risk assessment, kept up to date. Since 1 October 2023 every responsible person must record the full assessment in writing, whatever the size of the business, together with the name of the person or organisation who carried it out.

The responsible person is usually the employer, or whoever controls the premises. In shared buildings, each responsible person must cooperate and share information. Who is the responsible person?

What we look at in offices and small workplaces

  • Things that could start a fire: electrical equipment, chargers and extension leads, portable heaters, kitchens and kettles.
  • Things that could burn: paper, packaging, waste and stored materials.
  • Escape routes: corridors, stairs and exits kept clear, with suitable signs and emergency lighting.
  • Fire doors: self-closing, in good condition, and not wedged open.
  • Fire detection and alarm: whether the system suits the building, and whether it is tested and maintained.
  • Firefighting equipment: the right extinguishers in the right places, serviced.
  • People: visitors, lone workers and anyone who may need help to evacuate.
  • Management: fire marshals, staff training, fire drills and records.

Common issues in small workplaces

  • Fire doors wedged or propped open.
  • Exits or escape routes used for storage.
  • Extension leads plugged into each other, or overloaded sockets.
  • No record of fire alarm or emergency lighting tests.
  • An assessment that was never updated after a layout change or new staff.
  • No plan for visitors, or for staff who need help to get out.

Most of these are quick and inexpensive to fix once they are spotted.
